Why Care Decides Years Six and Seven

A lorry washed with ordinary soap and a soft sponge, parked under a roof, usually reaches the seven-year end. A lorry jetted hard along its edges every week and left out in open sun every night lands at five. None of the routine below is expensive or slow — it just has to be consistent.

The First Week After Installation

The first few days are when the adhesive reaches its full strength on the lorry surface.

Do not wash it too early

Give the installation time before the first wash. If the lorry has to be cleaned straight away for operational reasons, use a soft damp cloth and keep pressure off the edges.

Inspect and report early

We back installation with a 7-day workmanship guarantee. Use it. Walk the lorry once, look at every edge, every corner and the areas around rivets. If anything has not seated correctly, tell us inside that window and we will fix it.

Keep it out of direct heat in the early days

Where you can, park in shade for the first few days. It costs nothing and gives the installation the best start.

How to Wash Lorry Stickers Properly

A good wash is not a hard wash. The goal is to lift dust and road residue before they get a chance to abrade the surface.

What to use

• Neutral pH car shampoo, not industrial degreaser.
• A soft sponge, microfibre mitt or soft-bristle brush.
• Ordinary tap water, cool or lukewarm — not hot.
• Two buckets if possible: one for soap, one to rinse the sponge so grit does not go back onto the body.

What to avoid

• Strong solvent cleaners, thinner, petrol or kerosene — these attack the vinyl top layer.
• Stiff brushes, cutting pads and anything that would scratch paint.
• Acidic wheel cleaners that land on the body panels.
• Washing a body that is still very hot after a day on the road.

The right order

1. Rinse first with running water to carry off loose grit — never start scrubbing a dusty body.
2. Wash top to bottom so dirt runs down rather than across panels you have already cleaned.
3. Use light pressure and straight strokes, not hard circles.
4. Rinse thoroughly so no soap dries on the surface.
5. Dry with microfibre, especially along edges and panel seams where water likes to sit.

Pressure Washers and Automatic Brush Washes

Most lorry operators use a pressure washer. You do not have to stop — you just have to use it correctly.

Distance and angle matter more than pressure

The problem is rarely the machine; it is the nozzle held close to a sticker edge at a sharp angle. Water at high pressure will find any edge it can get under. Hold the nozzle at a comfortable distance, aim square at the panel rather than raking across an edge, and use a wide fan nozzle instead of a pinpoint jet.

Mind the edges, not the middle

The middle of a panel can take normal treatment. Door edges, corners, rivet areas and the borders of a cut sticker are what need a gentle pass.

Automatic brush washes

Rotating brushes apply repeated force at edges and corners — the two places most likely to fail. Where you have a choice, touchless or hand washing suits a stickered lorry better. Where you have no choice, do not worry excessively; just check the edges afterwards.

Where You Park — the Most Ignored Factor

This is the cheapest thing to fix and the most commonly overlooked. Your lorry may drive eight hours a day, but it parks sixteen. Where it parks decides how much sun it takes across the whole life of the stickers.

• A depot roof, garage or warehouse bay is the best option.
• Midday building shade is worth more than morning shade.
• Avoid parking under trees that drop sap or attract birds — bird droppings and tree sap are both acidic contamination.
• If the lorry has to sit outside, rotate its position occasionally so the same side is not always facing the afternoon sun.

Contamination to Clean Off Immediately

Most dirt can wait for the next wash. These cannot:

• Bird droppings — acidic, and they bake hard in the sun.
• Tree sap and resin — they bond firmly and are difficult to lift once hardened.
• Diesel or hydraulic spills — wipe off with soap and water as soon as possible.
• Wet cement, paint or site chemicals — clean before they cure onto the surface.
• Insect build-up on the front — soak with soapy water first, never scrub it dry.

The method is the same for all of them: soak with warm soapy water, give it time to soften, then lift gently. Never start with scraping.

Check the Edges Monthly

Once a month, walk around the lorry and look at the edges — doors, corners, rivet areas and any cut border. You are looking for one thing only: an edge starting to lift.

A lifting edge caught early is a small job. A lifting edge left for six months lets wind and water in, and the damage spreads inward until a full panel needs replacing. That is the difference between a minor repair and a redo.

6 Things to Never Do

1. Never use strong solvents or thinner to lift stubborn dirt.
2. Never scrub with a stiff brush or metal pad.
3. Never stick other adhesives on top of the graphics — cheap tape leaves marks when removed.
4. Never scrape dried contamination with a blade, coin or metal scraper.
5. Never run straps or canvas directly over a sticker edge without padding — repeated rubbing wears the top layer.
6. Never leave a lifting edge "until we have time" — it is the one form of damage that genuinely spreads.

A Short Maintenance Schedule

• After every muddy run or site job: a light rinse so mud does not dry onto the surface.
• Every one to two weeks: a full wash with neutral shampoo and a soft sponge.
• Monthly: an edge and corner inspection.
• Every six months: look at the design as a whole — is every detail still correct, and does the text still read from a distance?
• Immediately: clean off bird droppings, tree sap, diesel and site chemicals.

That is the whole routine. Nothing special to buy, and no step that takes longer than an ordinary wash.
