Attractive Lorry Sticker Design: 7 Directions That Still Read at Highway Speed

A lorry design that looks great on a monitor often fails on the road, because the driver behind you only has three seconds. These seven design directions are sorted by one test: can it still be read at highway speed?

Attractive Lorry Sticker Design: 7 Directions That Still Read at Highway Speed

Why a design that looks great on screen can be unreadable on the highway

The Base Rule: Three Seconds, One Message

Your lorry is not a poster. A poster is read by someone standing still two metres away from it. Your lorry is read by someone driving 90 kilometres an hour, two lanes over, while watching the car in front of them. 🚚

That difference changes everything. On a monitor every design looks clear — you are sitting 50 centimetres from artwork zoomed to 100%. On the road, that same person has roughly three seconds before your lorry is gone.

So we start every design with one question: what is the one thing that has to stick? The company name? The phone number? A single service? Pick one. A design that tries to say five things at highway speed succeeds at saying none.

A quick test before you approve artwork

  • Shrink the artwork until it is as wide as your thumb on screen. Whatever is still legible is all the road will get.
  • Strip the colour out — convert it to black and white. If the text sinks into the background, the problem is contrast, not colour.

Seven Lorry Sticker Design Directions

These are not seven templates. They are seven directions — different ways of organising the space on a lorry body, each suited to a different kind of business. We draw every one from scratch around your name, your colours and the work you do.

1. A big name on one block of colour

One full background colour, the company name running across almost the whole body length, and nothing else but a single service line and a phone number. This is the safest and strongest direction at distance, and it suits almost everyone — contractors, logistics firms, wholesalers.

If you are not sure where to start, start here. This one rarely fails.

2. The diagonal cut

Two colours split by a diagonal running from low-front to high-rear. The diagonal gives a sense of movement even when the lorry is parked, and it hides a little of the body's unevenness. Put the text inside the larger field — never let the diagonal cut through the company name.

3. A full-body product photo

If you sell something people recognise by sight — food, drinks, furniture, building materials — one large, sharp photo lands faster than any sentence. The condition is resolution. A photo that looks fine on WhatsApp will fall apart when it is blown up to four metres.

Keep one clean zone above or below the photo for the name and phone number, so the text is not sitting on a busy image.

4. A repeating pattern with a clean text zone

Patterns — stripes, geometric shapes, a simple motif — fill a lorry body without needing expensive photography, and they still look tidy on a body that is no longer perfectly flat. The key is discipline: pattern for decoration, one empty panel for information. Never set text over the pattern.

5. Dark body, light type

A lorry in black, charcoal or deep blue with white type looks more expensive than it costs, and the contrast is very high in daylight. It also hides dust and rain marks better than a white base — which matters on Malaysian roads.

One caveat: a dark body shows scratches more clearly, so dark matte vinyl wants washing more often.

6. One oversized icon as the main image

Not a small logo in the corner — a single icon or shape blown up to nearly the height of the body, with the company name smaller beside it. This works when your brand owns one easily recognised shape. It does not work when your logo is full of fine detail.

7. Minimal: logo, one line, one number

A white or soft single-colour body, a mid-size logo, one short line that plainly says what you do, and a large phone number. This is the calmest of the seven, and it is the one most often chosen by companies that already have a name.

Ribs, Seams and Doors — Where Your Artwork Disappears

A lorry body is not one flat sheet. It has vertical ribs repeating along its length, seams where panels meet, rear door hinges, a fuel cap, and sometimes a ladder or a side rail. Every one of them eats part of your design.

What happens if you ignore them

  • A letter landing on a seam reads as broken — the eye takes that line as part of the letterform.
  • A face or a round logo crossing a rib will look bent, no matter how well it was installed.
  • Graphics spanning the rear doors split in two every time the doors open. Sometimes that is fine; sometimes it ruins the design.

How we avoid them

We ask for photos of your actual lorry — left, right, rear, cab doors — before design starts, not after. Then we place text zones between ribs rather than across them, and pull important elements away from seams and hinges. A curtain-side body needs different treatment again, because the fabric moves and folds.

If you drive a prime mover or a lorry with a particular cab shape, read our guide on how Scania and Volvo body shapes change the artwork.

Colours That Survive the Malaysian Sun

Our sun is not gentle. Heat, heavy rain and year-round UV mean some colours work considerably harder than others.

Contrast matters more than colour

Yellow on white vanishes completely at distance. So does dark red on black. What works is a light-dark pair: white on deep blue, black on yellow, white on red. Convert your design to black and white and look — if it is still clear, the contrast is right.

Do not hang everything on one subtle colour

Pastels, light greys and soft gradients lose their shape at distance. Save them for small details and use saturated colour for the big elements.

Material and Installation

A good design on cheap vinyl still looks bad within a year. We print on 3M and Avery cast vinyl — weatherproof, UV and rain resistant, with a vinyl life of 5 to 7 years.

Every job carries a 2-year colour and material warranty and a 7-day installation workmanship guarantee. Design is done in house with 2 free revisions, so you are not stuck with the first draft.

Installation happens at your own location — your workshop, garage or company yard. Your lorry does not have to be sent anywhere, so you do not lose a working day.

Cost and Turnaround

Pakej Standard — a 1-tonne or 3-tonne lorry, single-side or partial coverage — starts at RM2,200.

Pakej Size XL — a 5-tonne lorry, a full wrap, or a fleet of five or more — starts at RM3,500.

Full details of both are on our packages section. We work Malaysia-wide, including lorry stickers in Shah Alam and lorry stickers in Klang — the two densest commercial lorry areas in the Klang Valley.

Closing

An attractive lorry sticker design is not the one with the most elements — it is the one understood fastest. Pick one message, give it real size, put it on strong contrast, and lay it out around the ribs and seams of your particular body.

All seven directions above pass the same test: still readable at highway speed. The rest — colour, style, the personality of your brand — is the part we design with you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How big should the lettering on a lorry body be?

It depends on the distance you want it read from and the length of your body. Our working rule is simple: the company name should occupy at least a third of the body height. Smaller than that and it only works for people standing close.

Can I bring my own design?

Yes. If you already have artwork files, send them over and we will check whether the resolution and layout suit your lorry's size. If something needs adjusting, we tell you before anything is printed.

How many times can I ask for changes?

Every job includes 2 free revisions. Most customers settle in the first or second round, especially when the lorry photos come early.

Can the left and right sides be different designs?

They can, but we rarely recommend it. Two different sides weaken the repetition that makes lorry branding work. What is worth designing separately is the rear door, because that is the surface the driver behind you looks at longest.

How long does the design stage take before installation?

Design usually takes a few working days, and it depends heavily on how quickly you reply to drafts. Installation itself is scheduled after you approve the final artwork.
